Dutch Meatballs
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground meat (50/50 beef – not lean and pork)
- 2 slices of white bread
- 1/3 cup of milk
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp of freshly grated nutmeg
- ½ tsp of ground clove
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
- ½ cup butter
- 2 cups water
- 1 can or 14 oz. of beef broth
- 1 package of dry onion soup mix
Timing
TOTAL TIME: 1 HR 25 MIN
- Prep: 10-15 min.
- Cook: 70 min.

Directions
- Place meat in a large mixing bowl
- Crumble up the bread over the meat
- Add your milk and beaten egg
- Knead mixture with your hands until ingredients are combined
- Add in onion, nutmeg, clove, salt and pepper and mix well with your hands
- Form 6 equally sized balls
- In a Dutch oven or deep dish frying pan, melt the butter over medium-high heat
- Brown the meatballs in the hot butter until brown on all sides
- Stir in the water, beef broth and onion mixture
- Bring to a simmer and reduce the heat to medium-low
- Simmer for about an hour
- Keep turning meatballs to ensure an even coating
Chef’s Notes
- I like to add more raw onions into the broth.
- Can be served with mashed potatoes and green beans (traditionally)
