Why We Burpee

The Ataxia Burpee Challenge is a virtual fundraising event in support of Ataxia research and awareness. The National Ataxia Foundation is accelerating the development of treatments and a cure while working to improve the lives of those living with Ataxia.


Some are joining for themselves, others are joining for their loved ones who unable join themselves. Some are here to support the cause they believe in, others just want to help and have a good time. Join us for one or all of these reasons.


Hope For Ataxia will be doing a live finale event on June 26th. We will have guests join to do their challenge burpees live and encourage the community to hit their goal.

We are looking for people like you to take up the challenge and spread the word about Ataxia. We need your help, sign up today!

It is a virtual fundraiser where participants will ask for donations from people they know in exchange for a commitment to do burpees.

  1. Register solo or join a team with the Ataxia Burpee Challenge.
  2. Talk to people in your network about the challenge, let them know you are doing burpees for each dollar they donate.
  3. Share your goal and your progress on social media, engage people who ask questions.
  4. Check your position on the leaderboard and share your victories with us.
  5. Watch the stream June 26th on our Facebook page to hear from the community and do your burpees in a supportive environment.
  6. Wrap up and let us know how it went!
  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, weight in your heels, and your arms at your sides.
  2. Push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body into a squat.
  3. Place your hands on the floor directly in front of, and just inside, your feet. Shift your weight onto your hands.
  4. Jump your feet back to softly land on the balls of your feet in a plank position. Your body should form a straight line from your head to heels. Be careful not to let your back sag or your butt stick up in the air, as both can keep you from effectively working your core.
  5. Jump your feet back so that they land just outside of your hands.
  6. Reach your arms over head and explosively jump up into the air.
  7. Land and immediately lower back into a squat for your next rep.

Form tip: Avoid “snaking” the body off the ground by lifting the chest first and leaving the hips on the ground when raising body back up off the floor.

Luckily, this move is super versatile and can be tailored to any fitness level.

When you first signup you’ll be sent an email with a link to your page. You can also edit your page to update your image, goal and text on your page about how you are taking the challenge. Simply share the link to your personal page to anyone you talk to about the challenge.

The platform and non-profit we are raising funds for are in the US, so your donation would be processed in USD. The conversion to your local currency would happen by your credit card, not the donation platform. If you have any questions about the rate of conversion, you will need to ask your credit card company.

We are hosting a live event June 26th to help your burpees along. You can also do your burpees any time that works best for you, including right in front of your donors when they donate.

Feel free to do your burpees any time that’s best for you. There is no requirement to join the live event.

Absolutely! We encourage you to spread the challenge by getting your team involved. When you signup, you’re given an option to join an existing team or create a new team.

In our first year, we are looking to keep the logistics and participation simple. Hope for Ataxia will not be providing any rewards if you sign up and there are no milestones for donations Positivity and community is why we are doing this fundraiser. We are looking for supporters like you to join the cause, get fit and have some fun!

You are welcome to adapt your commitment to your donors. If you know you don’t have good endurance, feel free to do 1 burpee for 2 dollars, or adapt the kind of burpees to your ability.

All funds raised are going directly to the National Ataxia Foundation. Their mission is to accelerate the development of treatments and a cure while working to improve the lives of those living with Ataxia.

Hope for Ataxia is a not for profit working with the community. National Ataxia Foundation is a nonprofit  as well, but they are focused on and connected to medical research. Hope for Ataxia has partnered with the NAF to raise funds for their worthy cause.

Yes. You will be provided a tax receipt for your donation to NAF through the cause website Mobile Cause. This is a donation to a non-profit in the United States, so applicability to your taxes may be limited if you are not in the US.

When you sign up on MobileCause, you will receive an email that will let you edit your personal page for the cause. If you cannot find the email, you can find your personal fundraiser page and in the bottom right click on “is this your team?”.

We chose burpees because our goal is to reach outside of the Ataxia community. We feel we are more likely to reach more people with a larger audience.
